Glasswool batts are easy to cut and move around, making installing insulation in your home a simple DIY project. You must ensure that the batts are fitted tightly into the joists – any gaps around and between the edges of the batts will greatly reduce the effectiveness of your insulation. Glasswool fibres are not harmful to your health, but some people may experience a slight skin irritation during installation. If this is a problem, we recommend that you wear sensible protective clothing, such as dust mask, gloves and a long sleeved shirt, during the installation process. Polyester batts as Glasswool are easy install, but are non irritant and there is no need for you to wear protective clothing during the installation process.

Removal and/or updating of existing insulation.

Does your current insulation look like this?
- CELLULOSE

This insulation would only be achieving a maximum R1.5 Rating. My recommendation would be to remove this insulation then install a minimum of R3.5 Batt, so as to guarantee insulation performance.

Alternatively if the existing insulation is reasonably level and evenly distributed you could install an additional insulation over the top to increase the thermal efficiency, this application also seals in the dust that has settled over the insulation over the years.

Does your current insulation look like this ?
- FIBREGLASS

This insulation would only be achieving a maximum R1.5 thermal rating.

Being the older type fibreglass it would be advisable to remove these batts and vacuum the ceiling first, then re-installing a more user friendly insulation. It would be recommended that you install a minimum R3.5 thermal rating either Glasswool or polyester.
